Following basic training and Class "A" Radar
School I was assigned to the pre-commissioning detail for a destroyer
in Long Beach. She was being restored for service during the Korean era
but had seen much heroic action in WW II before being moth balled with
a liberal dose of cosmalene. Thus began my career of assignment to
several different surface combatants prior to entering the Basic
Enlisted Submarine School in 1960 as an FT1. Many of these fine crews
have formed reunion associations and schedule periodic reunions. I've
had the distinct pleasure of being able to participate in a few of
these reunion events. Note: Seven different
class vessels. What a learning curve for a young swabbie! All were
Pacific fleet assignments with much WESTPAC deployed time except for
the MALOY.
